Finite element simulation of the Portevin–Le Chatelier effect in highly reinforced metal matrix composites

The Portevin–Le Chatelier effect in an AlCu/Al2O3 composite with a large volume fraction (60%) of ceramic particles is investigated from numerical point view using strain-ageing visco-plastic material model for the metallic matrix and several different finite element meshes based on real microstructures. Even this very fraction, some serrations are observed experimental tensile stress/strain curves, together propagation bands localised plasticity. succeeds reproducing experimentally observed, allows fine analysis spatio-temporal evolution plastic strain rate. Different fractions then virtually generated, tested, compared to outline influence second phase effect.

A new three-dimensional unit cell model has been developed for modeling three constituent phases including inclusion, interphase and matrix. The total elastic modulus of nano-composite is evaluated.  Numerical results are in good agreement with the previous proposed theoretical modeling. Higher matrix and inclusion elastic modulus both can dramatically influence the total elastic modulus.
